Power Quality Solutions

Power Quality

Power Quality refers to the stability, cleanliness, and reliability of the electricity powering our homes, businesses, and industries. When voltage, frequency, and waveform stay within proper limits, equipment runs smoothly and efficiently. But issues like voltage dips, spikes, harmonics, and interruptions can cause downtime, data loss, or damage to sensitive electronics. As modern systems rely more on digital and power-electronic devices, maintaining high power quality has become essential for safety, performance, and overall energy reliability.

Power Quality Matters because the performance, safety, and lifespan of electrical equipment depend on the stability and cleanliness of the power they receive. When power is unreliable—full of voltage dips, spikes, harmonics, or interruptions—equipment can malfunction, shut down unexpectedly, or suffer long-term damage.

Power quality is fundamental to the efficiency and reliability of electrical systems. Ensuring optimal power quality enhances performance, supports sustainability, and protects investments in equipment and infrastructure.

Key Power Quality Solutions

1

Power Factor Correction (PFC) Solutions

  • Capacitor Banks (Fixed or Automatic): Improve power factor by compensating for reactive power.
  • Active Power Factor Correction Systems: Use power electronics to dynamically maintain near-unity power factor under varying loads.
  • Static VAR Compensators (SVCs): Provide fast-acting reactive power compensation in large industrial or utility systems.
2

Harmonic Mitigation Solutions

  • Active Harmonic Filters (AHFs): Electronically cancel harmonic distortion in real time across multiple orders.
  • Multi-Pulse or Active Front-End Drives: Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) designed with low harmonic distortion input stages.
3

Voltage Stabilization and Sag Mitigation

  • Dynamic Voltage Restorers (DVRs): Compensate voltage sags and swells within milliseconds.
  • Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS): Provide short-term backup and voltage regulation for critical loads.
4

Surge and Transient Protection

  • Surge Protection Devices (SPDs): Divert lightning or switching surges to ground, protecting sensitive equipment.
  • Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors (TVSS): Installed at main and sub-distribution panels for layered protection.
  • Isolation Transformers: Provide galvanic isolation to protect against transient disturbances.
5

Monitoring and Diagnostic Tools

  • Power Quality Analyzers / Meters: Measure harmonics, flicker, transients, and unbalance in real time.
  • Smart Sensors and IoT Edge Devices
  • Energy Management Software: Analyze power quality trends, detect anomalies, and optimize load distribution.

Solution Overview

The following case demonstrates the improvement in power quality achieved by installing three 60A PCSn Active Harmonic Filter (AHF) units for the LVSB:

Note:

  • Load – before filtering
  • Source – after filtering

Results:

• THDi from load side reduced from 12% to about 1% after filtering.

• Current unbalance reduced from 5.5% to 0.2%.

• Neutral current reduced from 139A to 3A.

Improved THDi, neutral current and current unbalance together
Additionally, as the old AHF cable experienced overheating, we replaced it with dual neutral cables to reduce the associated risk.
